SEO Pricing in 2026: What Drives the Cost of SEO

Abstract illustration about SEO pricing with rising charts in navy and cyan

Almost every conversation about SEO ends up at the same question: "Fine, but how much does it cost?" The answer "it depends" is annoying, but it is honest. SEO pricing works a lot like renovation pricing. Painting one room and replacing the plumbing in a whole flat are both called renovation, and nobody expects them to cost the same.

This article looks at what actually drives the cost of SEO, which payment models you will find on the Bulgarian market, what you should get for your money and which offers are better left alone. We also give rough market ranges in euro, so you have a reference point before you ask for a quote.

Why SEO has no single price

SEO is not an off-the-shelf product. It is a set of activities chosen according to the state of the website, the competition in the niche and the goals of the business. Two sites with the same number of pages can need completely different budgets.

Picture a dental clinic in Burgas and an online shop selling phone accessories. The clinic competes for a few dozen local searches and needs a well-kept Google Business Profile, a handful of strong service pages and reviews. The shop competes with national chains for thousands of product terms, has hundreds of categories and filter pages that create duplicate content. The amount of work is simply not comparable.

The five factors that set the budget

  1. Size and condition of the site. A clean 15-page site needs far less technical work than a shop with 4,000 products, slow load times and old redirects.
  2. Competition. The stronger the sites on page one, the more content and links you need to reach them.
  3. Geography. Local SEO for one city costs less than a national campaign, and multilingual international SEO is a category of its own.
  4. Scope. Advice only, or does the agency write content, fix code and build links itself?
  5. Starting point. A new domain starts from zero. An older site hit by an algorithm update needs cleaning up before it can grow.

Payment models for SEO services

Monthly retainer. The most common model: a fixed monthly fee for an agreed scope of technical work, content, on-page optimisation, links and reporting. SEO compounds over time, so a retainer suits most businesses that want steady growth.

One-off project. Good for clearly bounded jobs: an SEO audit, a site migration, a technical clean-up after a redesign, or structuring categories for a new shop.

Hourly consulting. Works when you have your own team to do the work and just need direction.

Pay for results. Sounds attractive but is rarely fair in SEO. Nobody controls Google's algorithm, and "results" are easily defined as rankings for terms nobody searches for. If someone offers "pay only for first place", ask which keywords and what their search volume is.

Typical market prices in Bulgaria

The figures below are general market observations, not WEBPROGRESS prices. They are here to give you a sense of scale so you can judge whether an offer is reasonable.

Service typeTypical market rangeWho it suits
One-off SEO audit150-900 €Any site before a campaign or after a traffic drop
Local SEO, monthly200-500 €Service businesses in one city
Business website SEO, monthly400-1,000 €Small and mid-sized companies competing nationally
E-commerce SEO, monthly600-2,000 € and upShops with hundreds or thousands of products
International and multilingual SEOfrom 1,500 € per monthBusinesses selling in several countries
Hourly consulting30-80 € per hourCompanies with an in-house marketing team

The ranges are wide because of the factors above. An offer below the lower end is not automatically bad, but check carefully what it includes.

What a good SEO proposal should include

Technical work. Page speed, mobile experience, indexing, sitemaps, redirects, duplicate content and structured data. Without this foundation everything else runs at half power. If your site is old and slow, it can be cheaper to consider a new website than to patch old code for months.

Keyword research. A good agency starts with data on what your customers search for, how often and how hard it is to rank.

Content. New service pages, categories and articles, plus improvements to existing pages. Find out who writes them and how many are included.

Links and authority. Links from other sites still matter. Ask how they are earned. Bulk packages of "500 links for 50 €" are a reliable way to get into trouble.

Reporting. A monthly report with organic traffic, rankings for agreed terms, enquiries and sales from organic search. Rankings alone do not pay salaries.

Warning signs in cheap offers: guaranteed first place by a set date, vague descriptions with no list of tasks, mass directory links, reports built around keywords with no search volume, long contracts with no exit clause, and refusal to give you access to your own Search Console and Analytics.

SEO pricing and GEO: the new line in the budget

In 2026 more and more people ask their questions directly in ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews. That has changed what an SEO service covers. Businesses now want to be cited in AI answers as well as rank in classic results.

This work is called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). It involves clearly structured content, concrete facts, FAQ sections, structured data and brand mentions on trusted sources. Much good SEO work helps GEO too, but there are specific tasks. Ask any agency whether they cover this. You can read more about our approach on the SEO and GEO page.

How long until SEO pays off

A realistic window for visible results is usually four to eight months, longer in very competitive niches. The first months go into technical groundwork and content; growth comes after that.

Take a small accounting firm spending around 400 € a month on SEO, starting with almost no organic traffic. In the first three months the technical errors are fixed and core service pages are written. By month six the firm ranks in the top five for several local searches and gets 6-10 enquiries a month from Google. If one client is worth 1,200 € a year, the investment pays for itself quickly.

Compared with ads, the economics are different. With Google and social media advertising you pay for every click, and traffic stops when the budget stops. SEO pays for work that stays: a strong service page can bring visitors for years. If you need customers tomorrow, combine the two while organic traffic builds up.

How to spend less without cutting quality

  • Start with an audit so you only pay for work that matters.
  • Take on part of the work. If someone on your team writes well, the agency can supply topics and structure.
  • Focus. Ten key services or categories fully optimised beat 200 half-finished pages.
  • Get the basics right. A fast site on good hosting reduces technical work every month.
  • Automate reporting from Search Console and Analytics with simple automations.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost for a small website?

For a small local business site, market prices usually fall between 200 and 500 € a month, depending on local competition and the state of the site.

Can SEO be a one-off payment?

Yes, for bounded tasks such as an audit, clean-up or migration. Sustained growth needs ongoing work, because competitors and algorithms keep changing.

Why is e-commerce SEO more expensive?

Shops have many more pages, more complex technical structures because of filters and variants, and compete for thousands of product terms.

When will I see results?

First improvements often show after two or three months, with a clear rise in enquiries usually between months four and eight.

What should I ask an agency before signing?

A list of concrete tasks, a sample monthly report, how links are earned and the termination terms. Also make sure you keep access to your own accounts.
