Influencer marketing for business: how to do it right

Influencer marketing and working with content creators

A natural cosmetics brand from Plovdiv spent 4000 euro on three influencers with over a hundred thousand followers each. The result: 190 visits to the site, eleven orders. Three months later the same brand works with fourteen profiles holding between three and fifteen thousand followers, spends less and books between 60 and 90 orders a month from the channel.

The difference is not luck. It is audience size, selection, and the fact that the second time there was measurement from day one.

What you are actually buying

Influencer marketing is not advertising with a nicer photo. You are buying trust someone built over years and borrowing it for one post. That is why the quality of the bond between creator and audience matters more than the size of the audience.

Searches for influencer marketing in Bulgaria run at around 70 a month and come mostly from owners of small brands who have already tried paid ads and are looking for another approach. The channel works, just not the way most people picture it.

Three different goals, three different approaches

Awareness means broad reach and fewer format requirements. Sales mean a discount code, a clear offer and creators who already talk about similar products. Content means you are buying material to reuse in advertising, and reach is a bonus.

Mixing all three into one brief is the most common cause of disappointment.

Audience size and what it delivers

Profile typeFollowersTypical engagementIndicative price per postBest suited for

Micro10,000 to 50,0003 to 6 per cent120 to 500 eurosales and reach

Largeover 200,000under 1.5 per centover 1500 euroimage, campaigns

The figures are indicative for the Bulgarian market in 2026 and vary widely by niche. Beauty and fitness cost more, books and crafts cost less.

The conclusion most brands reach after their first mistake: ten nano profiles almost always beat one mid profile on the same budget when the goal is sales.

How to pick the right people

Do not look at follower count first. Look at it third or fourth.

Check engagement

Add up likes and comments from the last ten posts and divide by follower count. Below one per cent on a small profile is a warning sign. Read the comments themselves: if they are only emoji and "nice", the audience is bought or indifferent. Real questions about the product are the best signal.

Check audience overlap

Ask for statistics on gender, age and cities. A profile with eighty per cent of its audience outside Bulgaria is useless to a shop that only delivers here.

Check partnership history

If the profile promotes a different product every week, the trust is already spent. Look for people who turn offers down and mention few brands.

Check whether the product fits

The best results come from creators who would buy the product anyway. It shows immediately in the tone of the content.

Measuring reach and engagement in creator campaigns

A brief that produces good work

A short brief with clear boundaries works better than a long script. The creator knows their audience better than you do.

Include the following. What the product is in one sentence. What problem it solves. Three things that must be mentioned. Three things that must not be said, usually medical or exaggerated claims. Format and number of posts. Deadline. How the partnership is labelled. Link and code. Whether the material can be used in paid advertising and for how long.

Do not write the copy word for word. Posts that read like a press release are spotted by the audience in seconds and damage both sides.

The partnership must be clearly labelled. The "paid partnership" tag on Instagram or an explicit mention of advertising in the caption is not optional, it is required under Bulgarian consumer protection law and the practice of the competition authority. Hidden advertising is a risk for the brand, not the creator.

Put content rights in the contract. The usual arrangement gives the brand the right to use the material in its own channels and in paid advertising for six or twelve months, for an additional fee or as part of the main one.

Also record publication deadlines, a minimum period the post stays up, and consequences if the creator pulls out.

How to measure results

Likes are not results. Here is what is.

Give every creator a unique discount code and a unique link with UTM parameters. The code captures people who saw the content and bought later without clicking. The link captures direct traffic. Together they give a picture close to reality.

Track new users rather than total traffic, and make sure purchase events are configured in GA4. Without that you will be comparing impressions.

Also record indirect effects: a rise in branded searches in Search Console in the days after the post, new followers, enquiries in direct messages.

Evaluate a campaign at least fourteen days after the last post. Sales from creator content arrive with a delay, unlike paid advertising.

Common mistakes

Paying an unknown profile upfront with no contract. Tens of thousands of euro are lost this way in Bulgaria every year.

One post and an expectation of a miracle. A single contact rarely sells. Repetition with the same creator a few weeks apart works far better.

Ignoring the content after the campaign. Material you paid for can live for months in your ad account. If you did not negotiate the rights, you lose half the value. We describe how such content is used in paid campaigns in the article on Instagram advertising.

Picking by taste rather than data. A beautiful profile with a dead audience is expensive decoration.

No page ready to absorb the traffic. If a creator sends a thousand people to a slow home page, the money is wasted. A dedicated landing page with the offer from the video is the difference between two and eight per cent conversion.

When influencer marketing is not for you

For very expensive B2B services with a long sales cycle. For products that need an on-site demonstration. At margins below twenty per cent, where you cannot cover the goods and the fee. And for a business with no working website and no measurement, because you will pour budget into a hole you cannot see.

Frequently asked questions

What budget should a first attempt have

A sensible start is between 500 and 1500 euro spread across six to twelve nano and micro profiles rather than one large one. The goal of the first campaign is not profit but data: which profiles bring orders, which format works, which offer resonates. With that data the second campaign is far more accurate.

Is it better to pay with product or with money

Product works with nano profiles and with goods of high perceived value. Above ten thousand followers expect to pay money too. The mixed model, product plus commission on sales through the code, is the most balanced for small brands and aligns both sides.

How do I tell whether followers are bought

Check the growth curve if the profile shares statistics: sudden jumps without a viral post are a red flag. Look at the comment to like ratio, which sits between one and three per cent for a genuine audience. Review the commenting profiles themselves. And ask directly for reach on recent stories, a number that is hard to fake.

Do I need an agency

At budgets under three thousand euro per campaign, usually not. The commission eats a large share of the money that would otherwise reach creators. An agency makes sense with dozens of profiles at once, in regulated sectors, and when you have no internal resource for communication.

How does it combine with the rest of marketing

It works best as a source of content and social proof that then feeds paid advertising and product pages. A review from a real person placed on the product page and used in an ad keeps working long after the post has sunk in the feed. See also how we structure advertising channels.

Next step

Influencer marketing delivers when it is treated as a measured channel rather than a one-off gesture. Small profiles, a clear brief, unique codes, and patience for two weeks after publication.
